BBC Worldwide

North Ryde

BBC Worldwide Australia, at the outset of an immense period of growth and change, co-located two sites into one location in Macquarie Park. Eden Park is the perfect fit for both the expanding organisation and proximity to the evolving North Ryde media/technology hub. BBC Worldwide's new office boasts a large expanse of office-free open plan environment peppered with working lounges and alternative work areas.

Area: 2000sqm
Completion: March 2010
Designer: Ali McShane + design team

Thoughtspace worked with the marketing and communications team to develop a design strategy for the new facility. These brainstorming sessions resulted in a primary design driver which celebrates BBC Worldwide's identity as a media company. It evokes the look and feel of the company's global offices yet effortlessly embodies its unique Australian identity. It brings to life the company's key global brands such as Top Gear, Doctor Who, Dancing with the Stars and BBC Worldwide's local channel brands. BBC Worldwide was committed to incorporating an element of 'fun' into the typical workplace in addition to the functional and professional aspects of the design.

The central kitchen is inspired by the ever popular global brand that is BBC Earth. A striking combination of finishes including natural bamboo timber flooring, hand woven ratten finished for both furniture and lighting teamed with a field of grass sets the tone for the earth inspired space. Furniture selection embraces the concept such as the leaf chairs, pebble ottomans, and striking rattan hanging chairs and lounges. Together this creates the ideal sanctuary for BBC Worldwide to congregate, meet and work.

Towards the eastern façade BBC Worldwide's own Doctor Who Daleks lurk. Adjacent to an original 1960's Dalek is a 'not so typical' six person meeting room. Together with unique acoustic wall tiles, the distinctive aluminium ceiling and studded rubber flooring the room oozes style reminiscent of the admired TV hit series of Doctor Who. BBC Top Gear is also a feature in the viewing studio where screening of promo's takes place. A sweeping full height acoustic fabric wall printed with the striking 'Stig' creates the impressive backdrop to the surround sound studio.

Towards the middle of the floor the UKTV meeting booth nestles. The Banksia inspired graphics create an urban experience together with the studded 'booth' seats commonly used for informal meetings or alternative work environments. The BBC Knowledge meeting room offers an insight into this unique BBC concept. Interactivity and learning through life's experiences is the focus of this themed zone.

Dancing with the Stars is also captured by the elegance of the small meeting room adjacent to the reception foyer. The graceful translucent chairs accompany the heavily turned black lacquered table which sit superbly on the eye catching plush silk/wool rug. Ball bearing curtains sway in front of the full length mirrored walls to create the illusion of 'sparkle.' The images below are taken from the lift enclosure where your eyes are drawn to the intensely coloured master brand graphic that leads you through to reception celebrating the prominent brands. BBC Worldwide focused on the indigenous motif to link the brands and create a uniquely Australian experience.
